1 reap the benefitDecarbonising the economy holds many risks but it also offers plenty of opportunities. They lie in developing new technology, becoming more carbon efficient than competitors or selling genuinely green products to consumers. Firms that get ahead of their rivals and seize such opportunities will reap the biggest benefits.(0919 SR Directing the disruption)经济脱碳有很多风险，但也提供了很多机遇。这些机会包括开发新科技，比竞争对手更节能，或者向消费者销售真正的环保产品。领先于竞争对手并抓住这些机遇的公司将收获最大。
reap表示收获；取得成果(to get something, especially something good, as a result of what you have done)，主要用于褒义。经常跟benefit搭配，表示受益。
需要注意的是，reap表示的是因为自己做的事而有所收获，或者说因为付出而得到收获。在原文中，benefits就是来自get ahead of their rivals/seize such opportunities，也就是firms做的事。
写作中经常会在benefits前面加上形容词修饰词，如great/huge/substantial。也可以将benefits改为rewards。如：
Students who study hard at college can definitely reap huge benefits/rewards.在大学期间努力的同学定将收获满满。
也可以在benefits后面加上of something，表示因为...而收获。如：
Students who have prepared studiously for the CET test will reap the benefits/rewards of their hard work.用心备考四六级考试的同学将有所收获。

在写到未来科技/事物的利弊时就可以套用这两个表达。
2 wake up to
There have been oil slumps before, but this one is different. As the public, governments and investors wake up to climate change, the clean-energy industry is gaining momentum.以前也出现过油价暴跌，但这次却不同。随着公众、政府和投资者意识到气候变化，清洁能源行业的发展势头越来越强劲。(0919 Leaders Power in the 21st century)
wake up表示醒来，也就是意识更加清醒。衍生出的意思(wake up to)就是开始意识到(to become aware of something)，to的宾语通常是较为严肃的事情，或之前被人们忽视的事。
wake up to是个较为正式的写作表达，可以用来替代start to realise/be aware that。宾语可以是importance/severity(严重性)之类的词。如：
Many people have woken up to the importance of regular exercise.很多人开始意识到了经常锻炼的重要性。
文中以及这个例句中，wake up to后面都是名词成分。那么wake up to后面如果要加句子，该如何处理呢？
可以使用the fact that...。因为介词后面一般不能直接加that从句，因此这里的the fact不能省略。如：
Many college graduates are waking up to the fact that it is fairly easy to find a job, yet difficult to find a decent one.很多大学毕业生逐渐意识到，找工作很容易，但是找到一份好工作却很难。
有些用法书上会说，the fact that中的the fact都是可以去掉的，实际上这种说法欠妥。当that名词从句作为介词的宾语时，the fact必不可少，相[作文https://Www.ZuoWEnHUi.Com]当于将从句转化为了名词短语。
3 shrink into insignificance
When George Orwell was writing, almost 60% of Britons rented their homes from private landlords. After the second world war the private rental sector(PRS) shrank into insignificance, thanks to the rise of social housing.(0829 Britain Housing)乔治·奥威尔写这本书时，几乎60%的英国人从私人房东那里租房子。二站后，由于社会住房的兴起，私人租赁行业（PRS）变得不再重要。
insignificance是significance的反义词，表示不重要，也就是一种状态。shrink是个基础词汇，表示缩小，减少(shrink-shrank-shrunk)。shrink into insignificance就是变得不重要，即become unimportant。如
With the rising popularity of digital payment, cash has almost shrunk into insignificance.随着电子支付的日益流行，现金几乎已经不再重要了。
shrink也可以写成fade(逐渐消逝)：fade into insignificance，fade同样也是个基础词汇。
insignificance还有个非常地道的写作表达：pale into insignificance相形见绌。在写作中比较利弊时就可以用到这一表达，如：
The risks associated with artificial intelligence pale into insignificance when compared with its huge benefits.人工智能的巨大好处远大于其风险。
4 it follows that...
Meeting the Paris goals will necessitate a 90% fall from the current levels over the next 30 years. Yet during that time world population is expected to rise by 2bn and gross product may triple. It follows that the world economy must change dramatically.(0919 SR The great disrupter)要想达到巴黎协定的目标，在接下来的30年中，二氧化碳排放量必须较当前的水平下降90%。但是在此期间，世界人口预计将增加20亿，同时总产值可能会翻两倍。由此看来，世界经济必须做出巨大改变。
背景介绍：这句话中的Paris goals指的是Paris Agreement on Climate Change(《巴黎协定》)中制定的目标。其中一个就是将21世纪全球平均气温上升幅度控制在2℃以内，并将全球气温上升控制在前工业化时期水平之上1.5℃以内。在很多环保类文章中都会出现。
follow的一个常见意思就是发生在...之后。如Winter is followed by spring. 表示的是时间上的先后。而文中的follow则是表示因果关系，属于逻辑上的先后。如：
The conclusion that follows from these findings is that inner-city schools need more investment, not less.由这些发现所推出的结论就是，城市内部的学校需要更多的投资，而非更少。
在It follows that...这个句型中，it作形式主语，指代真正的主语that...。类似的句型还有It seems that...(似乎)、It happens that...(碰巧)。
that从句的信息就是由上一句所得出的结论。通常是理论上的，而非实际发生的。如果是实际发生的，则可以用as a result。在写作中对论点进行理论分析时就可以用到这个句型。
再比如：
With mobile banking on the rise, it follows that companies will try to relieve savers of their cash through the same channels.手机银行业务正在不断兴起，由此看来各大公司也将试图通过同样的渠道使储户减少使用现金。
