在除夕之前，人们都要忙着四件事：谢神、备料做@、扫舍和买年货。潮俗，每年冬至过后，家里要谢神。备料做“红桃发@”。是将大米和糯米分别浸于水中几小时，使米质松疏，捞干后于石臼中打成细粉，晒干。这就是做“红桃法@”的主料。扫舍要选择吉日，是一件不寻常的事。是日，各家主妇最忙，把屋子的里里外外打扫干净，对一些长年少用之物都要清洗。
十二月二十四日，就是传说中的“神上天”之期。是日，家家户户都要拜“糖桃”。一方红纸，上面用软糖摆成一粒桃子的形态，成为“糖桃”。此物沾住“杜王爷”的嘴，让其“上天说好话，落地保平安”。过年还要拜“老爷”，也就是祭神。祭神的祭品有三样：“红桃发@”、“鼠壳@”、“菜头@”。“红桃发@”就是用绿豆去壳，然后把豆磨成粉，接着蒸熟，做@馅料。“菜头@”就是萝卜糕。
过年祭祖，要到除夕日下午。过年，家里已成年有收入的小辈，要给长辈送“压岁钱”，长辈也要对未成年的小辈给“压岁钱”，户户如此，体现了尊老惜幼的美德。
在正月里，潮汕地区都游神祈福的活动，就是把庙里面的神座抬到大街上游行，人们要放鞭炮、烧香、接福。这就是潮州春节的习俗。
